Oh, how I love the random produce that ends up in our major grocery chain here and there.Â While shopping a few weeks back, we stumbled onto some star fruit and cherimoyas, and thought it was high time for a special two-fer edition of What The?Â Foods.
Since we started this challenge of ours, we find ourselves poking around a bit, looking for odd shapes and colors.Â And okay, I’ll admit my first real exposure to the idea of either of these fruits was through some sort of Baby Einstein knock-off video.
In any case, I’ll admit that up until this point, I’ve never been all that curious about strange looking fruits.Â The basics, available year-round, more than filled my personal needs.Â But when a kid says “Mom, we should try THAT ONE!”Â it seems like a pretty good thing to do.Â So!Â First up:Â The Cherimoya.
According to good ole Wikipedia, in 1866, Mark Twain called the cherimoya “the most delicious fruit known to men.”Â Â We shall see, Mark Twain.Â We shall see.
The fruit itself is a lizardy looking green, shaped like a heart.
When I cut it open, I was sort of surprised.Â I was expecting a more fiberous fruit, or something along the lines of that weird Kiwano we attempted earlier this year.Â But no, it was a white, creamy texture, more along the lines of a cantaloupe than anything else.
We pulled out the seeds easily, and took our first bites.
While I’m not right there with Mark Twain (possibly because I’m not a man) this was really pretty yummy. It was creamy and sweet, with a lovely perfume and a candy-like taste. Apparently, another name for these are custard apples, and I can see how that came to be. I can’t really put my finger on it, but it was very appealing. The kids weren’t as taken with it, but they each dutifully ate their slice, and proclaimed it “okay.”
Next up? Star Fruit.Â I really didn’t know what to expect with these.Â I mean, I’ve seen them included in fruit salads by people like Martha Stewart, but didn’t really have an expectation of how they would taste.
I gave them a good wash, and took a beauty shot or two in my poorly lit kitchen.
Apparently I skipped a step, because you are supposed to peel off the brown edges of each star point.Â Whoops.Â I just went straight to the slicing part.
Aaaand I think maybe the Star Fruit I bought were not as ripe or something as they should be, because they were on the rubbery side.Â The flesh was like one of those green grapes – slightly tough skin, firm flesh and not a whole heck of a lot of taste.Â I’d love to try these another time, but maybe I’ll save it for a tropical vacation.
So, the What The? Food score is cherimoya=pretty okay and star fruit=probably need to get this one closer to where they are grown.
