Sweet Red Corn09.19.10

Camping Summer 2010 We’ve got a whole bunch of posts piled up over here, and I’m determined to get them posted this week!  This summer, we took our annual family camping trip to the Sonoma County coast.  We always bring along easy to cook and eat foods for our meals, and divide up the days – my parents plan for one entire day’s worth of meals, and I usually do the other day.  This year, my mom picked up some sweet red corn, something we hadn’t tried before.  We’re all corn fans, so it wasn’t a real challenge-worthy choice, but certainly, it was novel.

There was some discussion over how to cook it – we could have grilled it over the fire, but we were hungry and didn’t want to mess with trying to time it right, so we opted to remove the husks and steam them in large pot over the cookstove.

New Carrots and Leeks07.15.10

123 A few weeks back, we ventured back to the Farmer’s Market here in Santa Rosa.  We came away with baguettes and flowers, honey and cherries and figs and a couple of bundles of new carrots and leeks.  Oh, and some butter.  I’ll get to that in a minute.

We always have a blast wandering around sampling and deciding on what to bring home.  The Boy is more adventurous when faced with tables loaded with fresh-from-the-farm produce, and I’ll admit, I’m even more excited than he is to see him go – ooh, what’s that?  Mom, let’s buy those and try them.

Of course, once we get them home, that’s a whole different story.  Carrots and leeks are both familiar and one of those things I’m negating the try-it-three-times rule on.  The Boy was not that excited about it, but hello?  Look at how cute these carrots are:

The Salad Wars03.20.10

045As I recently wrote about on our family blog, we’re having a bit of a shifting of the rules over here at Kid Vs. Produce. I’m realizing that barring an allergic reaction or some sort of other extreme aversion to a particular food, this whole “try it three times and then reject it forever” rule was pretty ill-conceived.  For some of our What The?  Foods or seasonal oddities, sure. But for the vegetables and fruits that we use frequently as part of our meals, I’m not willing to give him a pass just because he has turned his nose up at something three times.

I’ll be jotting down our amended rules in a bit – but for now?  It’s Salad Days, babies.

See this normal looking plate of food? Bread, cheese tortellini with marinara sauce, and a bagged Trader Joe’s Caesar salad. I figured I’d start small, and keep the kid-friendly items front and center. Croutons? Check! Shedded Parmesean? Check! Garlicky dressing? Check! Crunchy, mildly flavored lettuce? Check!
